Gun Permits

 

1.  Who may obtain a Gun Permit?

Title 14 (Section 177) of the Alabama State Code provides that the Sheriff of a county may issue a qualified or unlimited license to a person residing in the county, and is a suitable person to be licensed. Kevin Williams is the Sheriff of Marion County.  

2. Who may not obtain a Gun Permit?

There are many people who cannot obtain a Gun Permit. Most of these are prohibited because of certain state and Federal Laws. All the Laws contained in this question are contained in the Alabama State Code and in the Gun Control Act of 1968. The people who cannot obtain a pistol license are as follows:

1. No person who has been convicted of committing or attempting to commit a crime of violence;
2. No person who is a Drug Addict;
3. No person who is a habitual drunkard;
4. No person convicted of a felony;
5. No person discharged from the armed forces under dishonorable conditions; No person who has been adjudged by a court as mentally incompetent;
6. No citizen of the United States who has renounced his citizenship
8. No person convicted of the Family Violence Act, even though the charge maybe a misdemeanor;
9. No person illegally or unlawfully in the United States
10. No person who has been convicted of an offense involving firearms;
11. No person who has been convicted of an offense involving explosives
12. No person who is not deemed suitable or proper by the Sheriff’s Department.

3. What are the age requirements to obtain a Gun Permit?
           

It is the policy of the department that a permit will not be issued to anyone under the age of 21.

 

4. May a Gun Permit be revoked?


Yes, Title 14 (Section 177) of the State Law provides that the Sheriff may revoke a Gun Permit.

 

5. Is the permit valid in other counties?

 

Yes, Title 14 (Section 177) of the State Law says the permit  is valid within all the counties of the state.

 

6. How can a Gun Permit be renewed?


Come Into the Sheriff’s Office at the courthouse to renew your permit.

 

7. What is the cost of a Gun Permit?


$15.--

 

8. Will I be investigated if I make an application to the Marion  County Sheriff’s Department for a Gun Permit?


Yes, we will make an investigation

1. We will check to see if you have a previous arrest record.
2. We will make whatever investigation that is necessary

Pistol Permits - Reciprocity
 

In 2001, the State of Alabama passed legislation recognizing handgun licenses issued by other states provided that state would recognize Alabama's pistol license. This allows residents of the State of Alabama who have a valid pistol permit to carry their weapon in any of these states, and also authorizes person from these state to carry a pistol in Alabama. The agreement is often updated, so please review the latest list by contacting the Attorney General's Office in Montgomery at (334) 242-7300. Visitation

What time is Visitation?

  • Visitation is Sundays from 2:30-3:30.

 

What is the time frame to visit if you have recently been incarcerated?

  • You will have to be bonded or released thirty days prior to visiting an inmate, unless circumstances dictate longer.

 

Can I visit both a male and female inmate?

  • You can only visit male or female not both

 

When visitation is inside, thirty minutes for felony, thirty minutes for misd. One visitor per inmate.

 

Property will not be given out till after visitation

 

If male visitation is cut short, female will be cut short also and vise versa

 

YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO VISIT IF YOU HAVE:

  • SLEEVELESS SHIRTS
  • HANDBAGS
  • TOBACCO
  • WEAPONS
  • FIREARMS

 

LIMIT 2 VISITORS MALES

               1 VISITOR  FEMALES

 

MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE

 

ANYONE ON PREMISES IS SUBJECT TO SEARCH

 

ANY VEHICLE ON PREMISE IS SUBJECT TO SEARCH.

  • 1   pair Tennis Shoes (white or gray)

Items they may not have brought in must be bought from store:

  • Hygiene supplies
